$28 Million In Question Behind Life Threatening Xarelto Side Effect
Xarelto, a drug prescribed for the treatment of deep vein thrombosis, has been the subject of controversy for months due to a potentially deadly and previously unknown side effect. The commonly prescribed drug, manufactured by Bayer, a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson, has been under investigation for claims of uncontrollable bleeding for most of 2017 and has finally resulted in a landmark verdict against Bayer and J&J.
Bayer, and Johnson and Johnson, leaders in the pharmaceutical manufacturing industries, were recently ordered by a Philadelphia court to compensate an Indiana couple $28 million dollars for failure to sufficiently warn of internal bleeding risks. The verdict comes after Bayer and J&J were believed to have several successes defending against internal bleeding risks claims like this one. In addition, it helps substantiate the roughly 20 thousand other cases that are currently pending against Xarelto in federal and state courts.
While $28 million surely seems like a significant loss, for both Bayer & J&J, companies who top the list of total revenues produced in the pharmaceutical industries, it will be insignificant in comparison to the sale of their pharmaceuticals. Bayer and J&J earned an estimated $2.3 billion in 2016; of which 7% accounts for the sale of the potentially fatal Xarelto.
It’s no surprise that these company's, who many times choose to defend against these cases to protect profits or the sale of their drug, plan to appeal the $28 million dollar verdict. Bayer and J&J spent $806 million in 2016 on litigation expenses and that amount has continued to grow over the course of the last year. However, in this recent verdict, they may be experiencing what it means to be responsible for releasing a drug that may cause uncontrollable bleeding and has no known antidote.
Holding major pharmaceutical companies accountable can seem challenging, especially when they fight so vigorously to silence victims of defective drugs. However, with the proper litigation team, compensation for unknown and life-changing side effects is possible. If you or someone that you love has been seriously injured as a result of taking Xarelto you may be entitled to compensation. Xarelto litigations are currently pending.
